The City of Cape Town Wants to Raise Your Rates — But What About the Damage They’ve Already Done?
As residents of Milnerton, we’re no strangers to the unbearable stench, the unsafe water, and the health risks that have plagued our community for over a decade. The pollution from the Milnerton Lagoon—caused by the City’s ongoing failure to maintain and upgrade wastewater infrastructure—has drastically affected our quality of life. Now, the City is proposing increased property rates and service tariffs across Cape Town, based on property values that no longer reflect the environmental realities in our neighbourhood.
Yes, we all want to contribute to a better Cape Town. But we refuse to pay more while getting less.
Here’s Why We Object:
Property values have plummeted in Milnerton due to pollution—but the City hasn’t adjusted its valuations.
Health impacts from air and water contamination have gone unaddressed by City Health.
The City continues to neglect Lagoon-facing communities—and now wants to increase charges for water, sanitation, and cleaning?
There’s been no accountability, no compensation, and no targeted relief for the damage caused.
We Demand Action Before Any Increases:
Freeze or adjust rates in Milnerton until pollution is resolved and values are fairly assessed.
Conduct an independent valuation review for pollution-affected properties.
Publicly acknowledge the damage caused by ongoing wastewater infrastructure failures.
Implement fair rebates and relief for Milnerton residents who’ve endured a decade of environmental neglect.
